Orthodonitic First Aid
How can I prevent orthodontic emergencies?
Many emergencies can be prevented by avoiding hard or sticky foods
What can I do if I have a poking wire?
Place a small piece of wax on the piece of wire that is poking. You can also use bubble gum. Call our office right away to set up an emergency visit and we will be happy to take care of the poking wire for you.
What can I do if my teeth get sore?
If your teeth are sore after an orthodontic visit, take aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) as normally recommended. Another tip is to rinse you mouth with warm water with a little bit of salt dissolved in it. This helps sooth the gums much like a hot-water bottle will do for sore muscles! Plan soft foods for meals until the discomfort goes away -- which is usually 48 hours. If the discomfort gets progressively worse or remains the same after 4 days, give our office a call!
What if one of my braces or bands is loose?
Save the broken piece and give our office a call so we can set up a repair appointment. Always call to let us know in advance of your appointment if something is loose or broken, so we can reserve additional time to do the repairs.
What if my spacer falls out?
If your spacer falls out 1 or 2 days before your banding appointment it is not a problem. The spacer came out because there was enough room, so we can fit your braces just fine! If your banding appointment is still 3 or more days away, the space may close up again. Give us a call so we can set up a quick appointment to replace the missing spacers.
