Frequently Asked Questions - Kids
Am I old enough?
When you are 7 years old we like to take a first look at your teeth! Some kids need treatment as early as age 7 or 8, and others not until they are older. At your first visit we will let you know the best time to start your orthodontic treatment. |
Can I play sports?
When you have a retainer or braces you can still play sports just like you do now. We may ask you to wear a special mouthguard that fits over the braces to help protect your teeth from bumps and bruises. |
Will it hurt?
We are very careful to make putting on your braces as comfortable as possible! After an adjustment some kids notice tenderness during chewing. During the first two to three days you will want to avoid things that are chewy. Take a look at the Orthodontic First Aid section for helpful hints on how adjust to these times. |
What causes crooked teeth?
There are many reasons for teeth to be crooked. The most common reason is simply lack of space for the teeth to fit comfortably. And the most common solution is to make more room! We will tell you exactly what's going on in your mouth when you come in for your orthodontic check-up. |
My dentist said I have an overbite. What is that and how do you fix it?
You have an overbite when your upper teeth are too far ahead of your lower teeth. We fix it by adjusting the way your jaws grow. That's why overbites are best corrected when you are a kid, and still growing. In the "Find Your Smile" section you will see a picture of an overbite. |
Can I get a retainer?
Yes you can, after we straighten your teeth first. Your retainer holds your teeth in position so you can enjoy your new smile for years to come. Retainers come in every color under the sun, and you get to pick. You can even bring in a small sticker or picture to put inside your retainer! |
